Transfer Credit Policy
Transfer Credits for Program Admission
To be eligible for the UC HIM Bachelor of Science program, all students must have graduated from a CAHIIM* accredited A.S. HIM (HIT) program. All HIM applicants are required to submit any previously attended college transcripts. Along with the students’ application‚ all transcripts are reviewed; credits/courses are selected for transfer into the progression program based on content and credit hours.
Transfer Credits for Advanced Standing
On a case-by-case basis, a student may petition to have Bachelor level credit from an accredited college or university be counted as the equivalent of another course in the curriculum and accepted as transfer credit.
In such cases, a student will have to supply a course syllabus to ensure that the content in the course taken at another university is equivalent to the content of the course in the HIM curriculum. Simply because courses have the same or similar names does not necessarily mean that the content of courses across universities is overlapping enough to justify “counting” the courses as equivalent.
Students may transfer up to 45 hours of Bachelor level credit in HIM courses from an accredited college or university. Bachelor courses outside of Health Information will not be accepted. Courses taken outside an accredited college or university–such as non-credit professional development–will not be accepted. Only courses with grades of C or higher will be considered for transfer. No credit is given for previous work history. Depending on the subject matter‚ courses taken 3–5 years prior to a student‚s entrance into the program will not be accepted as transfer credit. All final decisions are left to the Program Director’s discretion.
