What influenced you to begin teaching Health Information Management as a career?
A big part of being a practicing HIM professional is educating others and I learned early on in my HIM career that I was good at this. I taught some classes online at a local community college and I found that I also really enjoyed teaching online. When the opportunity arose for me to be an adjunct in the online HIM program at UC I was so excited to be a part of such an innovative program.
What is the best thing about the HIM program at the University of Cincinnati?
All the faculty in the online HIM program at UC have years of HIM experience that helps bring so much knowledge to the virtual classroom.
What makes this program so successful for students?
The modular learning allows students to learn chunks of information at a time and with our seven-week courses students can focus on one HIM topic at a time. Also, every time a class is taught, the content is reviewed and made relevant to the HIM climate at the time.
As a vital part of the HIM industry, what do you hope to accomplish throughout your career?
To continue to provide quality online classroom experiences for all HIM students for many years.
How do you see the HIM industry changing in the next 5 years?
The implementation of electronic health records is really going to change the type of job roles that our graduates will be hired for and as HIM faculty we need to keep pace and provide students with the most current HIM knowledge available.
What piece of advice do you have for future and current students?
Online learning is great as it fits around your life. Always remember that school will take up a piece of your life and in order to be successful in the program you need to make a commitment to the program. The rewards that you will gain by having a bachelor’s degree far outweigh the time and effort it takes to earn it.
